Earth Hour 2011

This year the worldwide “Earth Hour” event gave me a hint what to
shoot for the Limits equinox. They say that we are slowly beyond the
limits of our mother earth’s resources.

We consume so much energy that our earth cannot reproduce it. So
let’s just give a break to the nature for at least an hour, and turn off
all the lights for 60 minutes.

With all the floodlights turned off at the main buildings of the city it
resulted in a very soft scene to the capital of my country. I chose this
very place to shoot because I wanted to take a long-exposure picture
of our world-famous parliament and the lights turned off gave me a
chance to get some ships of long exposure on the Danube without
overexposing the building.

As you can see they only turned off the exterior floodlights at the
parliament. It was the same with the bridges: the street-lightnings
were left on not to disturb the traffic. However in the Buda Castle
everything was turned off as they organized a torch festival.

I added some small thumbnails of the most famous buildings of Budapest
for easier to recognize, you can find these at the bottom of the panorama.

Farewell party

From 1st february onwards I am working for a new company, my role was changed to IT systems engineer but basically my tasks remained the same plus some HW support and storage.

I worked 3 years at my former employer, I spent that time in an excellent team of IT professionals. We’ve helped each other along the way, had several teambuildings and many beers. That night we came together to remember the good memories and to have a good time. But this was not the last time, we promised each other to meet in the future.

To the quality of the picture: I have a new business laptop with an LED display. Alas it turned out that the LED display is not eligible for picture editing, so this panorama might have some flaws, especially with the colors. It is hard to rely only on the histogram and not able to take a look on a proof. So I need to procure a high-quality LCD for image editing.

WWP Crossroads – Nothin’ But The Blues Pub

As I first heard about the current event’s theme, I thought immediately about the Crossroads blues played by Robert Johnson. That song had frequently been linked to stories of Johnson selling his soul to the devil for the ability to play music, and it became a legendary anthem for all the classic blues fan.

I – myself being a blues fan – thought about making a panorama in one of my favorite pubs here in Budapest. The place called “Nothin’ But The Blues Pub”, and it has a very bluesy atmosphere. The guests are very friendly and the beer is inexpensive. If you are hungry they also serve some sandwiches which are very delicious and of extra size at a reasonable price. If you ever visit Budapest and want to spend a great night having some beer with your friends, I would recommend this place!

City Hall, Szekesfehervar

This was made last summer at the city hall in Szekesfehervar, during the GISS2008 event.

I gave a lecture about panoramic photography. I was invited to give a workshop at the
Urban 3D Modelling International Summer School. The study area was the historical town
center of Székesfehérvár (Alba Regia), the town where Hungarian kings were crowned.
During the summer school students could take part in keynote lectures, practical hands-on
exercises and fieldwork.

This picture was made at the city center in Szekesfehervar,
during a visit to the historical center. If you were there,

GISS 2008 – Garden of Medieval Ruins

Here you can see the ruins of the Basilica at the historical town centre in Szekesfehervar.

The Basilica commissioned by the first Hungarian King St Stephen served
as the coronation church and royal burial site. What remains of it, including
the memorial displaying St Stephen’s sarcophagus, has become a national shrine.

The garden ruins where the remnants of the basilica, its masonry, and
St Stephen’s sarcophagus are on display, were prepared in 1938 for the
900th anniversary of St Stephen’s death.

A mausoleum and masonry museum designed by Géza Lux were erected for
the sarcophagus. Its external walls are decorated with fine relief work by
Walter Madarassy, the stained glass windows were painted by Mrs Árkay
née Lili Sztehlo, and the walls bear a historical secco by Vilmos Aba Novák.

Extremely dense yet with a striking and expressive structure, Novák’s
composition begins with the baptism of Vajk (Stephen’s pagan name) and
with the story of the Holy Crown. Also featured on the walls: St Stephen’s
coronation, the legend of the holy right hand of St Stephen, the kings and
outstanding figures of Hungarian history, together with public personalities
representing the various eras, among them the governor Miklós Horthy, and
in the figure of Anonymous (the medieval anonymous notary who recorded
the history of the Hungarians) wearing his hooded cloak, the then Minister
of Education was displayed.

The secco created in 1942 was limewashed in the early 1950′s to conceal
the figure of Miklós Horthy whom the Communists despised. This, however,
protected the artwork from the rigours of the weather. In the early 1990′s,
it was restored and placed under protection.

GISS 2008 – Edelweiss at the Garden of Ruins

Albeit I had pretty much to do to prepare for my lecture about panoramics,
we’ve combined work with pleasure and taken this panoramic at a terrace pub
at the Garden of Medieval Ruins in Szekesfehervar.

This picture is a not-so-official panorama, it wasn’t amongst the panoramas
which was in the handout. By the way, I hope you’ve got all the stuff I gave
to Mr. Bela Markus on the day I left. It is very bad that no one left here a
feedback or some words about my lecture. I thought that it was interesting,
by every indication during the lecture it was at least interesting for some of you.

Me and my girlfriend arrived just a day before you, and I had the difficult
task to compile the whole stuff for the lab part of the day. (I’ve prepared the
presentation about a week before, so that was ready a long ago.)
First we went trough the center to select the appropriate locations for the
panoramas, then took the source pictures and went back to stitch it together.
I needed to make all the stitching, at least I had a reference Hugin project file
if something goes wrong. These you could even download from here!

After that I’ve uploaded all the source images to the lab computers. In the lab
there was only Wi-Fi connection, and it turned out that it is unsuitable for
copying multiple Gbytes of data over it. So I burned some DVDs, and spread
the stuff with the help of these disks. It was very hot in that lab, the air condition
broke down, and the whole process took the half of saturday. Fortunately I’ve
finished with it at 8 pm, and after that I could have some beer at the icebreaking party.

By the way, the third glass on the desk is a fake, we had only 1 beer per head.
I just could retouch it from the final panorama, as I don’t have a source picture of the
background without the glass.
